TOP TEN TUESDAY was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Okay, maybe I stretch it a bit here because a few of these are not necessarily a place setting, but more like a trope? A theme? I’m not sure but I’d count it anyways!

Apocalyptic Universe — Will I ever get tired of Divergent, Ready Player One or The Hunger Games? Probably never.
Boarding School — Yesterday, I re-watch all of the Harry Potter movies and suddenly, I was deep into the boarding school setting again!
Competition and Contest — Thanks to Spin the Dawn, now I need more intense competition drama in my life.
Fandom, fandom, fandom! — This year, I’ve read quite a few contemporary books focusing on fandom or being a fangirl, and I totally looking forward to read more!
Futuristic x Time Travel — Perhaps I said this too many times, but I was so impressed with Here and Now and Then by Mike Chen and its glorious time-traveling trope!
Historical Fiction Sets on the Beach — Another setting that I need after reading an outstanding book (Montauk by Nicola Harrison!). Everything is calmer just because there’s no phone yet to distract your peaceful time at the beach!
Magical Libraries — I just realized I’ve been consuming a lot of magical + witchy libraries this past week (Harry Potter, Mooncakes, The Black Mage) and I want more!
Modern Era and Its Tech — I need more story revolving around bloggers, vloggers, podcasters, you name it!
Underwater — This one is a classic because you can never go wrong with mermaids and underwater creature-beings!
University — Yeah, yeah, I’m not even in university anymore but so what! The ‘first day at uni’ trope is still one of my favorite.

Which setting that you’d like to visit more?

  1. Ah I love this list SO much! I also love boarding school settings, they’re always so much fun to read, and books about fandom as well always make me so happy and feel so seen, at times, haha 🙂

  2. I love this, Vinny! I’m with you on being a sucker for a good boarding school.😍There was a time years ago when I spent all my free time writing short stories based in boarding schools because I was just so obsessed with them! I also love books where the character is a fangirl just because it’s so relatable and gives me such contemporary vibes. Great post!

    1. Thank you, Olivia! I’ve never seen myself going to a boarding school but I’m totally a sucker if a story takes place in one! And yes, stories with a fangirl are always fun to read!

  3. This is a wonderful list!! I don’t think I”ll ever get tired of seeing magical libraries in stories. And there are two books coming out this year–The Starless Sea and The Library of the Unwritten–that I’m soooo excited for! And YES to more “first day at uni” tropes! I don’t often see that outside of romance which is such a shame. Also, I’d just like to say that your blog aesthetic is off-the-walls GORGEOUS. <3

    1. Thanks, Kathy! ISN’T?! I have both of the books on my TBR and yes, I’m exciteddd! Aaaaa, thank you for your kind words! I’m thinking of changing things up a bit next month (nothing significant), but I’m glad you like it!

  4. I used to read a lot of boarding school books by Enid Blyton. A boarding school seems like such a cosy setting, especially Hogwarts. In some films, however, they are seen in a harsh light. Almost like prison? 😂 x

    1. I’m obsessed with The Famous Five, but I don’t think I’ve ever read about the boarding school ones. Hahaha, yep I can totally see why you’re saying that! The book versions are mostly cozier and have more magic touch on it!

      1. Thank you! I’m glad someone agrees with me. I’ve just taken a break from reading Rainbow Rowell to respond to all of these comments (I’ve been away for a few days). Books are always cosy!

  5. YES TO ALL OF THESE. I love your spin on it. I’m right there with you on dystopian settings. I’m forever trash for those. AND BOARDING SCHOOL. AND, actually, LITERALLY EVERYTHING YOU JUST LISTED. Ah!!! Great picks.
